"Over the years, I have been dedicated to trying to keep my body fit through cardiovascular and strength training workouts. What was missing from this well balanced routine was the use of my mind and breath to effect positive changes within my body. Because research has shown that meditation benefits virtually every system in the body, I believed it was a practice worthy of learning. I've searched for years to find a place to learn the art of meditation and was always disappointed with the results. While taking her yoga class, Jamie also offered a class on meditation and my daughter and I enthusiastically enrolled. It was a wonderful experience. We learned various basic principles, different techniques of breathing and posturing, and the beneficial effects to both body and mind. She supplied you with everything you need to get started, took the mystery out of it and after 4 weeks sent us off with enough knowledge and technique to confidently start our own practice. "Initially I was hesitant to participate in a Yoga class as I have always preferred the “rush” of a cardio-workout. I had read up on the benefits Yoga provides, and I was not disappointed once I started taking the class. I have been taking Yoga with Jamie now for over 4 years and she is a knowledgeable, patient and inspiring instructor. She takes the time to explain the proper execution of each pose and offers different levels for each pose for varying abilities. She conducts her class in a total ”NON-JUDGEMENT” atmosphere. The only person’s performance you are trying to be better at, is your own. By attending Yoga class I have increased my body strength, flexibility and energy level. Jamie always makes you feel a certain level of accomplishment when you walk out of her class. I look forward to each class with great enthusiasm. Jamie is the best yoga teacher I have ever encountered. She is extremely knowledgeable about anatomy. She uses this knowledge to make her classes safe, challenging, and accommodating for people with all capabilities. I am in my 60's with osteoporosis, since participating in these yoga classes for several years, it has improved to osteopenia. Jamie has personally worked with me to teach me what I should and should not do. With that knowledge, I am able to participate in the Intermediate class with great results. I am stronger, more flexible, and definitely more relaxed. My favorite parts of the class are, of course, the final relaxation phase, but also, the chest opening poses that combat long days of hunching over a computer. Jamie is the BEST!
I’ve been taking yoga with Jamie for several years, and I’m so glad I took the chance on her class. She sets the tone of a warm and welcoming environment for people of all ages and skill levels. During class she offers numerous variations for poses to meet your needs and to avoid injury. She makes a point to thoroughly explain and demonstrate the various movements so everyone can achieve success. What I like best about her class is the emphasis on your personal practice and improving your own self. Since taking her class, I have learned good breathing techniques and ways to combat aches and pains by incorporating her lessons into everyday life. I came into yoga at a difficult time in my life and the practice helped me to overcome the difficulties and be more at peace with myself even through to today. As an instructor Jamie is very supportive of her students’ needs. She gently urges students toward constant improvement in their practice yet coaches us to “Always listen to your body” and that “yoga is not a competition". I have followed her to 3 different locations for over a decade now and always leave yoga class feeling relaxed and at peace. I began private yoga instruction with Jamie to prepare for a surf & yoga retreat in Costa Rica with my adult daughter. I had attended a local yoga studio for beginners and after the first class never even considered returning. I found it to be extremely impersonal and frustrating. All the things that I was told Yoga was supposed to be just didn’t exist for me in this group environment. I never thought I would return to yoga instruction again until I found Jamie. I had decided that if I was to go on this retreat I should open myself up to the possibilities of experiencing the entire retreat and not just the part I was most comfortable with; surfing. Working with her twice a week, I was surprised at just how different this experience was compared to the group class. I understood how the smallest of adjustments in technique changes how something should feel. How body and mind control can be accomplished if proper instruction/motivation is given. I am learning with each instruction how to better clear my mind and control my breathing (a work in progress!) to get the full benefit of this practice. But most of all I am surprised at just how much I’m enjoying this new adventure, how challenging it is and feeling the benefits from it. I’m a bit of a stubborn personality but I’ve been won over by how much better it is making me feel physically and emotionally. My continuation of personal instruction with Jamie has surpassed my initial goal for the preparation of the trip and I now continue as part of my weekly fitness routine. I really can’t say enough about what a great rewarding experience this has been for me. Jamie is a true inspiration and her knowledge in these practices have given me trust and confidence that I never dreamed was possible. ~Renee Finnegan
